Why Sports Cars are Popular?

1. Sports cars are popular because they are symbolic. Sports cars are considered a source independence or freedom. Drivers are no more hindered by the limitations and inadequacy of conventional cars and are able to have a flexible and free life maneuvering and tackling elements on the road with ease. This perception of freedom makes the sports car popular.

2. Sports cars are popular because of their “innovative technology”. People are attracted to technological progress; sports cars are a moving combination of technical and mechanical expertise.

Sports cars are considered by auto fans to be a complete package of technological advancement; from compact but robust engines to aerodynamic tailoring, sport cars symbolize the frontier of industrial design.

3. Sports cars are popular because of their capability to respond or counter the driver. Sports cars are sold, as surveys show, as extremely driver-responsive cars. The driver is has the complete control.

4. Sports cars are popular because they appeal to the driver’s desire of combining power and speed on the road.

While others look for performance, others desire a distinct design, and still others want both. Without any doubt, the sports car comes in a package that can match the consumers’ needs and wants.

Whatever one’s reason for possessing a sports car, it does not really matter; what matters is, if it’s the car that you want, and you can well afford it, then it should be what you are driving.

About Porsche

Ferdinand Porsche played an important role in the development of airplanes and racing cars, and the construction of tanks for the Wehrmacht. He is an automobile engineer with more than a thousand patents to his name. He was appointed chief engineer at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart in the 1920s. Later on, he set up his own engineering workshop and designed among others the Volkswagen. At the plant where Volkswagen was made, Wolfsburg, he was chief of operations and at the end of the war he was interned by the Allies.

He was released a few years later and started building his first car with his son, Ferry Porsche. The car was named the Porsche 356 and it was a sports car and a reminiscent of the Volkswagen. It had the same four-cylinder boxer engine that was rear-mounted, just like the VW. It was far from being a powerful sports car, developing only 40 bhp and a maximum speed of 87 mph (140 km/h). First produced as a convertible and later as a hard top it distinguished by the very elegant and innovative body. It was developed in the workshop of Erwin Komenda, a master of restrained streamlining who had been in charge of sheet metal and design techniques at Porsche since the VW Beetle. The new style of closed coupe was designed by Komenda and it soon became the embodiment of the sports car, thanks to its fastback.

This tradition was continued by Komenda and Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, the founder’s grandson, with the 911.

The 911 became easily recognizable: it had attractive sloping bonnet and what later became characteristic “frog eye” headlights, curves running from the top edge of the windscreen to the rear bumper and a straight waistline. From a functional and technical point of view it was more like BMW 1500, although it retained the stylistic features of the original Porsche. The new 911 will become the foundation stone of Porsche’s identity, even though the design was not always appreciated. During the 1970`s and 1980`s, the designers attempts to distance Porsche from its legendary design brought the company to the edge of disaster. The more modern 924 model, “a people’s Porsche”, developed with Volkswagen, as well as the 928 were far from fulfilling the expectations.

In the 1990`s, the company realized that what for over twenty years was perceived as a straitjacket, it was in fact a market advantage. During the 1990`s, Porsche became highly profitable since they now knew that the typical Porsche features were timeless. Nearly forty people now worked in the design department on further developments of the long-running 911. These developments included the 911 GTI, a powerful combination of sports and racing car, put forward by the in-house designer Anthony R. Hatter. In 1999, chief designer proudly presented the new Boxster which enabled Porshe to establish a second independent range of models.

Car Stereo Installation

In a car stereo installation, you have to determine what kind of rig you’re going to put into your vehicle. If you’re a beginner, it’s best you do a car stereo installation if it’s just a simple system. You may want to leave the complicated stuff to the professionals, like installing delicate equipment like LCD panels, motorized parts etc. especially if it requires the creation of custom panels and such.

Head units are one of the easiest to do in a car stereo installation. Fortunately, most units follow the same size standards (DIN). In many cars, once the factory radio is removed the aftermarket radio will fit in the hole. In many other cars, a kit is needed if the factory hole is too big, or not deep enough. In some cases the dash has to be cut. Any car stereo store should have kits required for installation.

There are two types of mounting in a car stereo installation. ISO mounting is when the radio can be screwed to existing factory radio brackets, such as in most Japanese cars. Ring mounting is when an aftermarket radio comes with a metal ring that gets mounted to the factory radio hole or aftermarket kit via bendable tabs. In many cars, dash and trim rings have to be filed to enlarge the radio hole. Once the ring is installed, the radio slides in and is held by snaps. In most cases, special tools are required to remove the radio.

Speakers are very critical in a car stereo installation. No matter how expensive your speakers are, if they are not properly installed, the sound will not be up to par.

In a simple car stereo installation, you’ll probably be using speakers that fit into a factory location. Just make sure there are no gaps or holes. Sometimes building a wood or fiberglass baffle helps reduce holes and gives you much better sound. But always be careful when using power tools around speakers. Car stereo installation warranties usually don’t cover holes in speakers.

For unconventional speaker locations, sometimes metal has to be cut. You might want to leave this to the professionals, tools like plasma cutters and pneumatics drills are required. But if you’re going to insist, a pair of metal snips (left and right cut) will do.

A car stereo installation has to put up with vibrations and other noise sources in its environment. Even though it is impossible to eliminate these completely, there are products that will greatly decrease the noise and rattling, particularly on non-luxury cars. Liners, sprays and adhesive strips and even carpeting applied onto the panels can make a world of difference.

Hydrogen vs Hybrid

Hydrogen cars do not generate power by burning anything

Instead of burning a bit of fuel, like hybrid cars too, hydrogen cars burn absolutely nothing. What happens instead is a chemical reaction. Hydrogen and oxygen get converted into energy and their byproduct is water. Hybrid cars certainly can’t do that. And no one is trying to make hybrid cars do anything like that.

Hydrogen in hydrogen cars gives three times the power of gasoline

Not only does hydrogen burn hotter than gasoline, but it also burns faster. That means hydrogen cars can probably go zooming down the highway at unbelievable speeds. They can probably come to a dead stop and start right up to keep up with the traffic in about zero seconds per minute. Boy, talk about the future. Hybrid cars just can’t compete with that kind of efficiency. Hybrid-car batteries certainly don’t burn hotter and faster than hydrogen.

Some people think that hydrogen cars are some sort of hyped-up fantasy

Many people think that hybrid cars are much more feasible than hydrogen cars. And hybrid cars already cut down emissions from 30 to 50%. So why in the world would people want to invest time and money in hydrogen cars?

Hydrogen is a not a fuel source, but a fuel carrier

That means that hydrogen has to be produced from other sources. And people are hoping that hydrogen will be able to be produced from things such as wind power or other types of renewable sources. Right now, it looks like all we have is natural gas. That is the most efficient way to get hydrogen. And if that’s the case, then there’s no need to make hydrogen cars. Hybrid cars already cut down on how much gas people use. Who needs hydrogen cars that may end up costing us more in natural gas?

It will be hard create a lot of stations to fuel hydrogen cars

People are saying there is an overwhelming amount of challenges when it comes to creating the multitudes of hydrogen fueling stations that would be needed if millions of people suddenly started owning hydrogen cars. Hybrid cars use gas. And we already have gas stations.

But president Bush has made it clear that he wants hydrogen cars to be on the roads in significant numbers by the year 2020. So it seems that those who oppose hydrogen cars might just have to hold their breath and see if hydrogen cars actually live up to the lofty promises people associate with them. If they don’t live up to their promises, people will probably start running back to hybrid cars in droves. And that’s not too bad. Hybrid cars or hydrogen cars, one of them is going to get us to cleaner air.

Why Consider a Hybrid Car?

The hybrid’s fuel efficiency is increased by its small size and the use of lightweight materials. Periodic engine shut-off is another fuel saving feature of the hybrid. When it is stopped in traffic, the hybrid’s engine temporarily shuts off. The engine restarts automatically when the car is put back in gear.

Hybrids are powered by the combination of an efficient gasoline engine backed by an electric motor for acceleration. The electric motor is powered by batteries that are recharged automatically by recapturing the kinetic energy usually lost during braking, known as regenerative braking. When the car is slowing down, the electric motor runs backwards, acting as a generator to charge the battery.

With this collection of advanced fuel efficiency features, hybrids can outperform conventional cars in several arenas.

Environmental Friendliness

Another reason hybrids are more environmentally friendly than conventional gas engines is that they idle less and use fuel more efficiently. The hybrid not only gets better gas mileage, it produces less pollution than other, non-hybrid cars. Some hybrids are getting 10 to 20 miles per gallon more than a regular gas engine. They are also capable of reducing harmful emissions by 90%.

Many hybrids use aerodynamic design to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. Low rolling tires made of special resistant rubber reduce friction on the road. The high capacity, nickel-metal-hydride battery pack is reliable and available to power the hybrid when needed. Hybrids also use the latest in power-train technology, for integrated power management that contributes to fuel efficiency.

Popularity Enhances Styles And Choices

More makes and models are now being offered as the popularity of hybrid cars continues to escalate. Buyers can now purchase the Honda Civic and Accord, Ford Escape, and Toyota Camry in hybrids. GMC and Chevrolet are currently making 2 hybrid pick-up trucks. In the near future, Saturn, Lexus, Honda, and Chevrolet will make hybrid SUVs available to the public. Chevrolet has plans to offer its Malibu in hybrid form in 2007.

You can get a hybrid that looks like a conventional car, such as the Ford Escape. Or you can choose a hybrid that looks completely different from anything else on the road, such as the Toyota Prius. With so many hybrid cars on the market, there is a style to suit almost everyone.

Tax Incentives Available

People who buy hybrids can get significant tax breaks from the US Federal government through 2006. The amount of your tax break is determined by your tax bracket and when you file. Some states are also starting to offer hybrid car tax breaks as well. Tax breaks backed up over the long run by lower fuel costs make hybrid cars a good buy.

Fuel Efficiency Becomes A Reality

Although most people have been aware of hybrids only in recent years, the technology has actually been around for a long time. Ferdinand Porsche built the first successful hybrid car in 1899. But hybrids first began to catch on in the 1990s when Honda introduced the Insight and Toyota introduced the Prius.

It’s been a long wait, but fuel-efficient transportation is finally becoming a reality with the hybrid. As more of these cars take to the road, our air will become cleaner, and our country will be less dependent on foreign sources of oil.

Tips to Clean a Car Interior

# All trash and large items should be cleared from inside the car. The area under the seats should be cleaned and it should be checked for large objects before using vacuum cleaner. The ashtray should also be emptied.

# All the floor mats should be pulled out and shaken thoroughly.

# The seat covers should be removed if applicable. They should be washed according to the directions. If one does not have a manual for the seat covers, the store from where the car was purchased can be called and the car dealer can be asked for cleaning directions. Some seat covers can be washed in the washing machine but the directions should always be checked first because different materials require different kind of care.

# The seats, floor mats and floor should be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner.

# Any stains on the floor mats should be cleaned using a carpet cleaner or a scrubbing brush.

# Any stains or spots present on the fabric seat cushions can be cleaned by using a stain remover or carpet cleaner.

# The car windows can be opened to let the air pass in for the seats and carpets to dry.

# The floor mats can be left to dry outside in the sun.

# The inside and outside of the windows can be cleaned by using window cleaner, paper towels or newspapers.

# The doors, dashboard and other vinyl areas should be cleaned with a clean rag or a vinyl protectant.

# Now when everything inside the cars has been cleaned, the floor mats and seat covers can be put back in the car after they dry.

Tips to Repair a Car Dent

Repairing dents are a type of ‘do-it-yourself’ style repairs and there are a number of things needed for it.

Following things will be needed for removing and repairing dents:

1. Dent pulling tool or dent pulling kit, it can be either purchased or borrowed.

2. Dolly, it is a specially designed tool made for flattening and reshaping metal. It is also important to have a metalworking hammer.
Many kits include everything that is needed to remove and repair small dents easily and quickly. A number of dent repair kits should be purchased from the market. Suction cups and similar implements are used by many of these kits. It has an advantage of eradicating the need of drilling holes in the finishing process for removing a dent.

Once the required tools are bought, following are the steps needed to complete the dent repairs:

– The center of the dent should be located, than a hole in the dent should be drilled with a drill bit of 1/8″. Alternatively, a hot glue gun can also be used to glue a plastic adapter to the center of the dent. Many dent removal kits contain these plastic adapters and glue guns.

– The dent pulling tool should be threaded into the newly drilled hole. It can also be attached to the plastic circle that is glued on the dent. When the dent pulling tool will be in place, it has to be pulled to flatten the dent.

– By using the metalworking hammer, the front of the dent has to be carefully hammered. It has to be done at the same time while the dolly is held firmly against the back side of the dent. During the work, it may be necessary to go underneath the car or open the trunk the car in order to reach the back of the dent.

– The paint can be grinded down to the bare metal by using a medium grit disk that is mounted on a drill. The area can be extended out at least one inch around the dent itself. Then the entire area can be filled with good quality body filler.

– The body filler has to be allowed to dry completely, than the area can be carefully sanded with sandpaper which that has been wrapped around a block of wood. When sanding, 36-grit sandpaper can be used in the start and then it can be worked up to a 120-grit sandpaper.

– A spray primer has to be used to prime the area; one has to be sure to use a primer which is specially designed for automotive use. Six coats of primer should be used; each coat of primer should be allowed to dry completely before applying the next coat.

– The primer has to be sanded using by using 600-grit wet and dry sandpaper. This will be helpful in removing any scratches. After this, the area should be touched up with a matching automotive paint. In case of the paint is not smooth enough, the area would have to be sanded and painted again until a there is a smooth surface.

Tips to Eliminate Blind Spots

Blind spots are the areas in which a vehicle cannot be seen from either the driver’s secondary vision, inside mirror or the side mirrors. Many drivers set their side mirrors in a way that they can just barely see the side of their car in the mirrors. By setting the side mirrors in a proper way and also using the rearview mirror can reduce the blind spots. However the size of these blind spots is still capable of hiding a vehicle.

How is Blind spot caused?

Perhaps one needs to change lanes or merge into traffic every time when while driving. These maneuvers of routine nature can cause dangerous situations because every vehicle has blind spots. According to a survey, there is an estimate of 630,000 lane change and merge crashes every year causing nearly 225 fatalities. Although not needed to say but the simple act of changing lanes or merging requires precautions and practice. Blind spots are also called blind zones.

How to eliminate blind spots

Following are some of the useful ways to remove blind spots:

– One should lean his head over in a way that it almost touches the driver’s window. Then the side mirror should be positioned on the car’s left side so one can just see the rear or the car or the quarter panel in the mirror. It must be noted that this will have the mirror positioned farther out than one did not possibly had it before.

– The center rearview mirror can be adjusted in a position that it faces the rear window’s center.

– The head can be leaned to the right for aligning it with the center of the car. An example can be just between the two front seats at a considerable normal height. The right side mirror can be positioned from there so the rear quarter panel of the passenger side in can be seen in the mirror.

– It can be noted while driving that a car passing by begins in the center of the rearview mirror. As it approaches, it moves to the side of the center rear view mirror. It appears on the side mirror at the same time. Because the mirrors are overlapped, this would mean that that there is no rear blind spot.

– It can also be noted that the side mirrors will now capture a great extra amount of view that is in the lanes quickly next to the car. Turning the head for needed before for ensure if there was nothing in the lanes next to the car prior to changing lanes. But now, the side mirrors have much better productivity and better job of covering this blind spot on the sides.
Useful tips

Following are some useful tips;

– At least one week should be given the new mirrors this way. It will initially seem strange in the beginning but soon one will get adjusted.

– It should be noted that parallel parking becomes more difficult as one can see his car what is next to it in the side mirrors without moving the head.

– Scanning the mirrors constantly instead of only checking them is helpful; particularly when one wants to change the lanes or pass the other will generally prevent someone from sneaking up. This mirror setting method of pairing with continuous scanning will help the driver to be aware every time of all those around.

Warnings

Following are some warning which one needs to give attention:

– The mirrors must never be adjusted while driving.

– Extra important information can be received about the traffic’s behavior through looking over one’s shoulders. One can never get this view even looking at the mirrors no matter how well they are positioned.

– One must make a habit to always look over the shoulders before changing lanes.

– Although this mirror technique is very beneficial in reducing the problem of blind spots but one cannot totally depend on it for eliminating blind spots. There may be other moving objects like even bicycles, motorcycles and smaller cars that can possibly hide in unexpected areas around one’s car.

Guide to Test a Car Spark Plug

Spark plugs are vital components of the car’s system. When a car’s engine slows down in its performance, it is a clear indication that the plug has become faulty. This means that the plugs are worn out. Before the worn out plugs are replaced, the manufacturer’s description they should be checked first. That description gives the exact specifications of the original car spark plug and also suggesting alternative ones if the original ones cannot be found. For ensuring that the plug is completely worn out, it needs to be tested first. A spark plug gauge is generally used for testing the spark plugs. Other areas for checking include plug cables as they indicate any cracks, splits and rust in the engine as well as any other damaged area of the engine.

Precautions must always be taken by the car owner or mechanic against risks of shock by wearing rubber gloves before starting the task. The mechanic must not lean against the vehicle while in a running condition. The functionality of the spark plugs can be tested by removing each plug from the car’s engine. A ratchet wrench can be used to remove the plugs. The user should turn the plugs in an anti- clockwise direction by using the ratchet wrench. This has to be done while the engine is still running. The owner of the vehicle will know that the plugs are still in good condition when the engine with start to slow down. If there is no reaction in the engine in any way when the plugs have been removed, then the plugs need to be immediately replaced.

The next step is to remove the wires of the spark plugs. This has to be done only when the engine has cooled down. The spark plugs can be tested if their ignition is working. It can be done by exposing the plug wire to a metal surface. If the plug emits a spark than this is an indication that the spark plug is in good condition. This procedure has to be repeated for every spark plug wire. It is necessary to clean the spark plugs regularly so their performance is not hindered. It can be further endured if the spark plugs work and another test can also be done on the same.

Overheating of a Car

The driver will know when the car is on the limit of overheating by looking at that plastic bottle and removing the radiator cap. The temperature indicator will also tell. The radiator fan cools the engine while the condenser fan increases air-conditioning while the car is at low speed.

Overheating is not one-sided problem but it mostly results from common reasons. There are few steps to avoid the engine from getting overheated. For troubleshooting, the engine should be checked if it is overheating, the cooling fan should be observed closely if it switches on when the engine temperature exceeds from normal. The engine can be turned on and looked for leaks, the engine must not be turned off as the radiator is being filled and this should be continued until coolant spills out from all bleed points.

When looking in to the issue of the overheating of a car, the air conditioning compressor needs the cooling fan working in idle mode as long as the car’s compressor is on. To check if the car’s cooling fan is working, the air conditioner has to be switched on. Its switches on together with the car’s air conditioner compressor. In case some cars have two electric fans, one for the air conditioner condenser and the other for the radiator. The radiator fan cools the engine while the condenser fan increases air-conditioning. The electric cooling fan on the radiator pulls warm air from the radiator to the engine.

Diesel has many advantages and it is more efficient than most engine fuel. It is preferred more than gasoline because it creates less noise in the machine, a machine running on diesel requires low and less maintenance, diesel doesn’t cause any sparks and the price of diesel is almost half less than gas in terms of Kilowatt consumed.

One possible reason why the cost of diesel is higher is because it is taxed higher than gas. The formation of diesel is diluted in US making its demand more than gas. Motorists feel that diesel is priced higher because it tends to give more mileage to their cars. Supply and demand of diesel also has an impact on its price. Many groups raise their concerns for environment safety which is affected by diesel although it has little to do with its high price.

As manufacturing of diesel is concerned, it is certainly easier and cheaper. Diesel’s price is highly unpredictable these days just like oil prices remain volatile. The car will not over heat because of the high price of diesel but if the engine has enough antifreeze in the radiator, there will be no problem of overheating.
